The primary reason for a root canal retreatment is the contamination of the previously treated root canal system. This can occur through various means such as a leaking filling, gum tissue recession that exposes the dentin, or decay in the tooth structure.

In some cases, the initial treatment may not have addressed all the intricate parts of the root canal, particularly in teeth with complex or tiny canals that are challenging to navigate. Additionally, certain bacteria may be resistant to standard disinfection methods, necessitating a more targeted approach.

Our retreatment process involves carefully removing the existing root canal filling, thorough cleaning and disinfection of the canal, and then refilling and sealing it anew. To ensure complete disinfection, we typically conduct this procedure over two appointments. While the success rate for retreatment is slightly lower compared to the initial root canal treatment, it still remains high – generally over 80%, depending on individual circumstances.
