DIAGNOSTIC STEPS IN ROOT CANAL THERAPY

At our dental clinic, we emphasize the importance of a thorough and precise diagnosis before proceeding with any treatment, especially when it comes to root canal therapy, retreatment, or endodontic surgery.

The journey begins with understanding your symptoms. We inquire about the duration and triggers of your dental discomfort, and how it impacts your daily life. This history helps us in forming an accurate diagnosis and crafting a tailored treatment plan.

Next, we focus on objective signs to pinpoint the exact tooth causing discomfort and determine if root canal treatment is the most suitable option. Various tests are conducted on several teeth to identify the presence and treatability of endodontic disease. We look for differences in sensitivity to pressure and temperature, often using an electric pulp tester to gauge the health of your teeth.

Radiographs, or X-rays, play a pivotal role in our diagnostic process. We take multiple images of different teeth to gather essential information. These radiographs help us assess if the bone around the tooth root is infected and to what extent. In certain cases, we might also use CBCT (Cone beam computed tomography) scans to obtain a three-dimensional view of the tooth structure and surrounding bone.

When tooth damage is confined to the enamel, it’s often painless and can be resolved with a simple filling. However, pain, sensitivity to temperature changes, or increased pressure indicate deeper damage, possibly extending to the tooth’s dentin layer or even its pulp. In such cases, root canal therapy might be necessary, especially if the inflammation is irreversible.

Neglecting treatment can lead to more severe pain, dental abscesses, and the spread of infection to adjacent teeth, sinus, or facial tissues. Root canal treatment can effectively alleviate these symptoms.

Symptoms like swelling of the gum tissue, formation of a gum boil, foul taste, or bad breath often indicate the need for root canal therapy. Additionally, systemic symptoms like fever, swollen glands, and lethargy may suggest a serious infection requiring immediate treatment and possibly antibiotics.

In instances where a definitive diagnosis is elusive, we refrain from commencing treatment. We might recommend a follow-up appointment for reassessment or a referral to a specialist, with no additional charge for this continued consultation.

At our clinic, we’re committed to accurately diagnosing and effectively treating your dental concerns, ensuring your comfort and health are our top priorities.
